BlinfoMail in Amerika

01-04-2004 - In het redactioneel van februari 2004 sprak ik over de problemen bij ACB radio. Kort daarna merkte ik, dat de BlinfoMail nieuwsbrief door meer mensen wordt gelezen dan ik had verwacht.

In een Amerikaans forum verscheen het hele artikel, dat zich voornamelijk bezig houdt met de plannen van de NVBS, maar door de opmerking over ACB blijkbaar de aandacht had getrokken. Genoeg aanleiding om het door een on-line vertaalmachine te halen, en te publiceren. Hieronder een stukje van deze 'vertaling':

When I had provided myself in 2002, access to computers, I arrived by my interest for non-Dutch Internet sites already rapidly on the Internet site of the American Council for the blind (ACB) and thereby the belonging ACB radio. Especially the heading ' Main menu ', which was presented Jonathan Mosen had my interest. During those months of explorations on the ' web for blind persons ' I learned it most on Wednesday, the day on which Main menu were repeating transmitted two hours long. Thanks to the tales, tips and guides, which played radio to the volunteers of ACB, I got a very well introduction in computer country for people with leeshandicap, and files were a source of inspiration.

Recently I for a someone promised certain programme from files and visited the FTP copy site of the radio station. To my stupefaction I, which had not been updated that months long, saw. Also the Internet site was no longer up-to-date.

It a number of BlinfoMail readers also not have escaped, whom ACB radio the last months much of its lustre have lost. After Jonathan Mosen in July 2003 left the station, it took over Dave Williams of him, and since then it has declined with the station.

Waar maar weer eens uit blijkt, dat computers nog een lange weg te gaan hebben, voordat we ze echt intelligent kunnen noemen.

Wat ACB radio betreft, daar klinken intussen weer wat vrolijker geluiden. 'Main Menu', het vlaggenschip van ACB Radio is in afgeslankte vorm weer teruggekeerd. In plaats van twee, nu één uur technisch nieuws en demonstraties van software waar blinden en slechtzienden iets aan hebben. De pagina van Main Menu op de ACB website gaat nog niet verder dan de laatste uitzending op 10 december 2003, maar daarmee is de lijst wel weer compleet.

Dave Williams, ACB Radio Director heeft garanties gegeven voor het voortbestaan van het radiostation, en daarmee een informatiebron van grote waarde voor mensen met een leeshandicap veilig gesteld.
